Fix Microsoft Family Safety require permissions despite being an adult account

Suppose you have a Microsoft Account or recently signed up for one. At times, when using your Microsoft Account, you are asked for Family permissions, as shown in the Image. This article outlines the steps to fix this issue.

Microsoft Family Safety require permissions

Why does Microsoft Family Safety require Permissions despite being an adult?

The reason for this anomaly, “Parent of Guardian consent is required for this account,” is simple. While signing up for a Microsoft account, you mistakenly set your date of birth to be under 16 years of age, which makes the System think you are a child in the Microsoft account system. A parent account is known as an organiser (which we would create to fix this problem), and a child account is known as a member (the problematic one). So a member account needs an organiser account to make changes.

How to Remove Microsoft Family Safety permissions

To remove the Microsoft Family Safety Permissions, one solution is to create a new dummy Microsoft account, make it the Family organiser, and use it to update the details of the member account (i.e., the original account). I have personally tested this method, and I can confirm that it works. In another words, this method can help to change date of Birth of a Child account of Microsoft Family.

Sign up for a new Microsoft account

  • Make a new Microsoft Account using this link.
  • Ensure the Date of Birth is correctly set of this new account, i.e. the date of Birth is > 18 years.
  • We would use this account to invite the problematic account as a Family member, i.e. get rid of “Microsoft Family Safety require permissions” issue.

Invite the Member account

Step 2 is creating a Microsoft Family. For that,

  • From the Organiser account, i.e. the new account, open Microsoft Family Page
  • Click the “Add a Family Member” button and enter the member’s email address. An email would be sent to them to be a part of the Family group.
  • Check the Email in the Member account, and accept the Invite from the Organiser account.

Change the Date of Birth of the Member account

Finally, to “remove the Parent or Guardian consent is required for this account” message, you must change the Date of Birth. For that, see the steps below:

  1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/profile page from the Member account.
  2. A pop-up would appear, which would ask for permission from the organiser’s account.
  3. Click “I am a parent or a guardian” and sign in with the organizer account. Do as per your wish – see the photo attached below.
  4. You should now be able to change the account’s Date of Birth, or in other words, change date of Birth of a child account of Microsoft.

Remove Family Safety Restrictions in Windows

Sometimes, even after changing the Date of Birth, you might be asked for Family Safety Permissions due to cache. To eradicate that, follow these steps.

  1. Remove Family Safety Cache: Simply delete the contents of the folder below to remove Family Safety data in Windows 11 and Windows 10. Remember, you must have Admin permissions. “%PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls
  2. Remove consent: You also need to remove consent for the Member account after changing the DOB, here.
  3. You can also leave the Family group once your Date of Birth is OK, from the Microsoft Family page.

Fixing the Microsoft Family Safety require permissions to access your account, is only possible via this method, which works in most cases. Also, you can change Date of Birth of a child account using this method.
