If you recently bought a Microsoft 365 Family subscription and see “Microsoft 365 Family 6 TB Storage missing,” learn why and how to fix it.
Microsoft offers several 365 subscriptions for its productivity suite, including 365 Premium, 365 Personal, 365 Family, and the recently introduced Microsoft 365 Pro. If you are a Microsoft 365 Family subscriber, you may have noticed that each individual member is no longer getting 1 TB of Storage space due to a recent Policy change from Microsoft.

What is the Microsoft 365 Family Storage benefit?
Microsoft 365 Family used to offer cloud storage through OneDrive, allowing each family member to store and access files across devices. With the 365 Family 1 TB storage benefit, each of the up to six people sharing the subscription got 1 TB of personal cloud storage, which could be used for documents, photos, videos, and other files. This made it easier to back up important data, sync files between devices, and access them from anywhere.
Microsoft is moving from per-user to a shared quota
A recent Microsoft policy change, discussed in this support document, highlights an important update to the Microsoft 365 Family 6 TB Storage policy. In this Policy, Microsoft will change the storage model for new Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions starting October 7, 2026. New subscriptions include 2 TB of shared storage, while existing subscriptions generally transition at renewal on or after April 1, 2027. The rest of the benefits, including AI aka Copilot remain nearly the same.
More details on 365 Family 1 TB per user Storage
Here are some points that explain this change more clearly:
- Instead of 1 TB of storage per user on the Microsoft 365 Family Plan, Microsoft now offers 2 TB of shared storage for the entire Family group. This means the total Microsoft 365 Family storage has decreased from 6 TB to 2 TB.
- Storage is shared across the subscription rather than assigned to individual users.
- The change is effective immediately for new users.
- For existing users, the change will take effect at renewal, or April 1, 2027, whichever is earlier.

Microsoft allegedly tells the benefits of this “consumer-friendly” change here:
From Microsoft:
Shared storage provides greater flexibility for families. With shared storage:
- Storage automatically goes where it’s needed.
- Members are less likely to run into individual storage limits.
- Unused storage can benefit the entire family.
- Additional storage purchases can help everyone with the subscription.
