What Is KB5094126?
KB5094126 is a Windows security update released in June 2026 as part of Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday cycle. It introduced stricter enforcement of Windows security components — specifically Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) and Hypervisor-Enforced Code Integrity (HVCI)
The Problem
After installing KB5094126, many users and IT professionals started reporting that Microsoft Word stopped working properly with third-party software that relies on Word automation (a technology that lets apps open, edit, or manage Word documents in the background) i.e. KB5094126 Word Integration problem arised.

Who Is Affected?
- Dental software users — Dentrix and Softdent users are facing broken document workflows
- Accounting/Tax professionals — CCH ProSystem fx Engagement and Workpaper Manager are affected
- Radiology/Medical imaging — PACS systems with Word integration are impacted
- Developers and businesses using any legacy app that integrates with Word via COM/OLE automation
What Does the Error Look Like?
Users encounter error messages when trying to open documents through their software interface — even though the same files open perfectly fine when accessed directly from Windows Explorer. On the technical side, developers see error codes like HRESULT 0x80020005 (DISP_E_TYPEMISMATCH) — essentially a “type mismatch” when the app tries to communicate with Word.
Why Is This Happening?
The June 2026 update changed how Windows handles certain background communication between applications. Specifically, it tightened security rules around COM/OLE automation — the technology that allows programs like Dentrix, CCH Engagement, and others to silently launch and control Microsoft Word in the background.
This stricter enforcement blocks the automated calls these apps have relied on for years, causing the integration to fail silently, thereby resulting in the after-install KB5094126 Word Integration problem.
What are the Workarounds if Installing KB5094126 Word Integration breaks?
For IT Administrators & Regular Users:
- Uninstall KB5094126: The most effective and widely confirmed fix is to remove the update entirely.
- This can be done via Windows Update history → “Uninstall updates”
- After uninstalling, it’s recommended to pause Windows Updates temporarily to prevent the update from reinstalling automatically.
- More on this is here.
- Open files manually — As a short-term workaround, affected users can navigate to the file location on the server/PC and open documents directly, bypassing the software’s automation
Note: Re-registering Microsoft Word (a common fix for Word issues) does not resolve this specific problem.
Microsoft’s Official Stance
Microsoft has updated its release notes to acknowledge KB5094126 as a known issue.
Microsoft has received reports of an issue in which certain third-party applications might be unable to launch Microsoft Office applications or open documents after installing the Windows updates released on or after June 9, 2026. This issue affects certain third-party applications that use OLE automation to interact with Microsoft Office applications. In some cases, the Office application or document might fail to open without displaying an error message.
Affected Microsoft Office applications might include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Microsoft Office applications when launched from within the affected third-party application.Reports indicate that this issue may affect applications such as CCH Engagement, Workpaper Manager, dental software (such as Dentrix and Softdent), and Zotero; other similar applications might also be impacted.
